Saint John trail runners support mental health
Saint John Trail Running (SJTR) is a community of trail runners in the greater Saint John area that meets weekly to run various trails around the region. Over the past few years the group has grown substantially—from 600 members on Facebook to over 4,500 today.
Alongside the growth of SJTR came a renewed purpose. What began as weekly runs and pop-up weekend events soon evolved into something much deeper: a supportive community for mental well-being. For many of the group’s members, trail running has proven to be more than just a form of exercise; it’s a mental health lifeline.
“Once you get into the trail running community, you see how many people are using running for their mental health,” says Mark McColgan, Crew Chief and Lead Guide for SJTR.
The therapeutic benefits of running in nature, coupled with the camaraderie of like-minded individuals, creates a space where people can connect, unwind, and heal. Stories of personal triumphs and struggles fill the trails, with many runners openly sharing how trail running has helped them overcome anxiety, depression, and other challenges. This strong connection to mental health is recognized even by local therapists, who have started referring clients to trail running as a form of therapy.
Running for a Cause
From the beginning, SJTR has been committed to giving back to the community. A portion of proceeds from every race goes to charity, with Just Us being the recipient of one of their most recent races. With 5 races per year, SJTR raises significant funds for local charities across Saint John.
“We’ve always donated since day one,” Mark says, explaining that typically $5 from each race entry is set aside for charitable contributions.
Mark and the Saint John Trail Runners recently raised $750 for Just Us, which will allow us to deliver free and low-cost counselling to those in need across New Brunswick.
A Community for All
What sets trail running apart, in Mark’s view, is the deep sense of community and support that it fosters. Unlike road running, which can often feel competitive and time-focused, trail running is all about helping one another. “You’ll see people stop their own race to help someone else,” Mark explains. This spirit of mutual support, combined with the physical challenge and beauty of nature, creates an environment that’s as much about mental health as it is about fitness.
Many people find trail running less intimidating than road races. With events like 3K races that span six hours, participants are often surprised by how much they can accomplish. The mental health benefits of being outdoors, exercising, and socializing with others are undeniable, and the trails have become a refuge for those seeking a balance in their lives.
Looking Ahead
Each year, SJ Trail Running continues to grow, with more races and more opportunities for community involvement. From supporting mental health to fostering an inclusive environment for all runners, Mark’s vision for SJTR is about much more than crossing finish lines—it’s about creating a space for healing, connection, and giving back.
