Free counselling being offered to Arabic-speaking newcomers
Newcomers face unique challenges when settling into a new country, and maintaining good mental health is crucial for successful integration. That’s why the Saint John Newcomers Centre and Just Us are teaming up to offer free counselling to Arabic-speaking newcomers in Saint John. Counselling will be offered every other Tuesday by an Arabic-speaking counselling intern until December 2024.
Providing culturally sensitive care in a client's native language can remove significant barriers to mental health support, allowing newcomers to express complex emotions and experiences without the added stress of language limitations. This tailored approach is crucial for those already grappling with the challenges of settling in a new country.
For newcomers, the process of acculturation can be overwhelming. Dealing with language barriers, cultural differences, homesickness, and the stress of building a new life can take a toll on mental well-being. This is where therapy becomes an invaluable resource.
Just Us counselling interns provide a safe, confidential space tailored to newcomers' unique needs. They help navigate the challenges of adapting to a new environment, reconciling cultural differences, and managing the emotional impact of leaving one's home country. This support is vital for smooth integration, helping newcomers build resilience, develop coping strategies, and maintain healthy mental states for all family members, regardless of age or gender.
While seeking professional help for emotional or psychological challenges may be stigmatized in many cultures, it's important to recognize that therapy is a sign of strength and adaptability, not weakness. Seeking support is a courageous act that can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life in your new country, setting the foundation for a successful and happy future in Saint John.
